Success Stories
Congratulations to Womenthatnetwork.com member, Dr. Sharron Stroud!
Winner of the 2009 “Promoting Universal Human Rights Close to Home” award from the City of Palm Springs, California. Dr. Stroud, along with 8 other community leaders, were recognized in a meeting held January 12th. The Palm Springs Human Rights Commission, as well as the public, nominated this year’s recipients.
“We hear a lot about human rights on national and international scales,” Chairman Jerry Trussell said. “This is a local but very prestigious award. It’s one means by which the Commission tries to encourage awareness and protection of human rights here in a small-town kind of way.”
We are proud to have Dr. Stroud as a part of our online community. Couldn’t we all use our own personal cheering section? That’s exactly what “Share Your Success” is for. I wanted to share with you one of my latest successes. When you meet old friends from years ago, it is so extraordinary. I met a group of about twenty girl-friends, all part of my student club, when I was a student.
Most of my friends brought their partner or husband. It appeared that most of the friends did not break up their relationships, so the partners and husbands were still the same!
I succeeded to find new people interested in my singing efforts. In one week only I will present myself with a recital and I found three members to join the audience.
The student club has interesting members. I discussed with a friend how she met difficulties, in the beginning of her career, years ago, to start working. She was to be earning more than her husband, a reason of not being accepted for a new post.
From Dr. Elisabeth van der Gulik:
It is coming near, my recital on the 9th of May. I have reached almost all possible guests. I made a telephone call to the sympathetic house owner, who owns the little concert hall and lives in the same house, to confirm my arrival on the 9th of May. That’s what the family asked me to do; to be sure, there will be only one performance at a time. I had a final rehearsal with my singing-teacher and I had a final rehearsal with my friend pianist, who feels also she has to give comments on my singing. She did not want to perform before an audience. I asked a professional pianist to accompany me. He was my accompanist three years ago. He is a good pianist. For the audience it will be a pleasure to hear him playing. We will rehearsal twice next week. I will not see my singing-teacher before June because she is in Italy at the moment. Time management is very important for an event like this. It is a challenge for me. I feel like making schedules in my mind all the time. I am taking off work next week to accomplish some tasks which can not wait. My colleagues will have to be on call, in case one of my clients/patients needs to see a physician. One of my colleagues was not very pleased about that. He is involved in the problems with the new influenza in Mexico. He will be very busy next week. I hope I can inform you next time that everything went well and write a post about my success!
From Dr. Elisabeth van der Gulik:
Last time I informed you about my coming recital of the 9th of May. It has been a very classical event. The audience was very satisfied with my program, as well as with my way of presenting it. They were very impressed by my singing. The charm of the evening consists of the fact that I have a personal link with all of those people present. The localization and the style of the house concert room contributed to the romantic environment of the evening. After the concert I was provided with plenty of flowers. I kept most of them until I returned home from my next success story, which took place in Croatia, where I participated in the 5th International Symposium on complementary supportive therapies. I had confirmation of accepting the abstract I submitted for presentaion just two days after my recital. I prepared a presentation about stress, entitled: “The Development of Stress,” the text of which will be published in the book, representing the results of the congress.
